Overcoming Failure: Strategies for Resilience

Many of us view failure as a bad thing, truth be told, it’s bad somehow because nobody wants to fail. However, we must understand that failure is vital to success and growth. For one to experience life in its fullness, success is not the only experience you should have, failure and disappointment should also be welcomed. Failure is inevitable but how you handle it is what matters.

Here are a few, tips I want to share learning from my experience.

  1. Step back and take a deep breath: Being hit with failure is like having a rocket hit you. You need to catch your breath and clear your head, do not be too much in a hurry to take the next step
  2. Analyze and evaluate the cause of the failure: You need to understand what went wrong and why, so you can learn from it and address it.
  3. Show yourself some empathy: Don’t be too hard on yourself, try to reason it out as you would if it happens to a friend. Give yourself a little credit, you did your best, but it just did not end as expected. This is not to say you should start giving excuses or show laxity
  4. Don’t give up: As I mentioned earlier, failure is part of the success story, you have to keep trying, no glory without a story.
  5. Develop an action plan: What do you want to do going forward and how do you do it differently to ensure a better and different result
  6. Share your story with others. Not just a success story should be shared, but the story of how you failed and why will teach more lessons.
  7. Finally, be positive: all things are possible to those who believe.
