How do we manage and treat depression?

Depression is a major brain disorder with no respect for age, gender, class, or race. It has become an epidemic among us that needs global effort to tackle it. So how then do we deal with this evil menacing and disrupting our lives? There are different ways or options of managing or dealing with it. It could be medical or non-medical. Medically there are drugs like antidepressants and mood stabilizers. Since am not a medical personnel, I will dwell more on the non-medical route.

  • My first recommendation will be therapy.  Learning to share your story is a major step to recovery and coming out of it. Although the fear of stigmatization and rejection makes us keep quiet about our challenges. We don’t know who to talk to and how we will be treated, however, professional therapists and counselors can help.
  • Lifestyle modification, exercise, a healthy diet, good rest, and good habits will also help. Self-love and self-care (avoid toxic and negative people, minimize stress-related activities, get a good night’s rest). Surround yourself with good and positive vibes and people.
  • Set small achievable goals for yourself. It could be to read one book a month (one that builds your confidence and motivates you), walk with a friend, have lunch out, or just be sure to do what makes you happy.
  • Learn what triggers your depression and avoid it as much as possible.
  • Seek support from family and friends.
  • And most importantly pray, God is more than able to save and deliver.

Remember, this demon is not a respecter of anybody, the best is to avoid it. So don’t do life alone talk to someone today.

Until the next post stay blessed and positive
