What are your vitals?

Hello people, it’s been a while, hope this find you well. Anybody excited about what I’ll be writing about today. Not the usual style of write up though, but it’s something that has become pandemic among us and have claimed many lives than you can possibly imagine. A bit medically inclined (am just a Biochemist, not a medical doctor) so permit the medical jargons you see

You might be wondering what this is all about, I tell you having a good understanding and better awareness might save your life or a loved one’s life. It is disturbing for me that in spite of all the raves, rants and noise about fitfam, healthy lifestyle, dieting and more, many are still at risk and the numbers are increasing by the day.

So lets start with the basis, vital signs monitoring. Oh no!! sorry I jumped the gun, someone is wondering what is vital sign?

Vital signs are a group of indicators that shows your level of wellbeing and how well your body is functioning. They include: Blood pressure, heart or pulse rate, respiratory or breathing rate and body temperature.

Quite a number of young people (30-45 yrs) have either been incapacitated or dead as a result of not paying proper attention to these signs. Recent studies shown that about 25% (1.1 Billion people) of the world population are affected, this is quite alarming at the same time scary (www.theguardian.com).

Below is a chart I got from National Emergency Medical Services Educational Standards (NEMSES)  (www.emt-national-training.com/vitals.php) This is just a guide, you should see a doctor to get your vital signs checked.

In my next write up I will explain what the numbers imply and what are the attending risk associated with the highs and lows and at the same time delve a little into the biggest culprit in the team, high blood pressure (I have been managing this for sometimes) which is a major culprit of the 4 signs.

Remember: your health and wellbeing is your sole responsibility, so take care of it.
