What is your exit Plan?

After graduation from college or university, we all dream of working with multinationals, banks, oil companies, have fully air conditioned office, ride big car, have lovely apartment and enjoy good life. For many these dreams come true, and the jobs comes with lots of promises which make us immerse our lives and selves to doing the jobs without thinking of an exit strategy or a retirement plan.

We spend most of our times, days and years investing in these white collar jobs and in the process many of us forget to invest in and develop themselves. We do not remember to make retirement plans, the truth of the matter, these white collar have a lot of enticing freebies, nice car, good office, nice apartment, awesome package and so on.

These freebies blindfold us to the true reality and at the end of the day, if there is downsizing and you are laid off, then reality set in and it becomes difficult to move on or start over. Many are stock in their jobs and are being tossed up and down, but they have to hang in since there is no exit plan.

Remember this: No matter how good the offer might be,always remember to make an exit plan.

 Exit

The economic situation is affecting many companies even multinationals, just today I heard that telecoms giant MTN laid off about 280 people, banks, FMCGs and automobiles are all downsizing because of the biting economic situation. This is one reason why the rate of suicide is on the increase, for someone used to a life of luxury to suddenly realize that their source of income is no more, that is too bitter a pill to swallow.

What can we do to avoid this, make an exit plan.

How? develop your competences and be a preneur of something. There is so much we can still do in the food space, artisan workers are making head way, what matters is your packaging and marketing ability. In spite of the harsh situation, some are still making it. Networking is too valid  a tool to be wasted, do your research, find out what you can do, the people you know and that seemly stupid idea may be the key to the breakthrough you have been looking for.

The wake up call to us all is that no matter how well a white collar job pays, it can never make you rich, it will only make you comfortable to some extent. Learn a trade or a hand work, leverage the steady income from the white collar job to establish a business.

Remember this: Love your job but don’t love your company, you never know when your company will stop loving you.
